What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing, also called online marketing, is the promotion of brands to connect with potential customers using the internet and other forms of digital communication. This includes not only email, social media, and web-based advertising, but also text and multimedia messages as a marketing channel.

Essentially, if a marketing campaign involves digital communication, it's digital marketing.

Key Channels in Digital Marketing

Here are some of the most important channels and disciplines within digital marketing that are relevant to startups.

1. Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

  • What it is: The process of improving your website to increase its visibility when people search for products or services related to your business in Google, Bing, and other search engines.
  • Why it matters: SEO is a powerful source of high-intent, organic traffic. When someone searches for a term related to your business, they are actively looking for a solution.
  • Key Activities: Keyword research, on-page optimization (improving content and HTML), and off-page optimization (building backlinks).

2. Content Marketing

  • What it is: Creating and distributing valuable, relevant content (blog posts, videos, podcasts, guides) to attract and retain a clearly defined audience.

Building a Digital Marketing Strategy

A successful strategy doesn't involve doing everything at once. Start by focusing on one or two channels where your target audience is most active. Test, measure your results, and double down on what works. As you grow, you can gradually expand your efforts into other channels.
